EU's Chief Barnier 'happy' to offer UK a customs union

  • Barnier offers to change the political declaration once May reaches a deal with Corbyn.
  • Pound pressured ahead of EU's Summit next Wednesday, April 10.

EU's Chief Negotiator Barnier said that he would be 'happy' to offer the UK a customs union, always considering that his priority is to protect the single market. He added that it wouldn't be easy, but he is confident that operational solutions to the Irish border situation can be found.

When referring to the latest decision of UK PM May to talk with opposition Labour, Barnier stated that he hopes talks will end positively, adding that the political declaration could be changed very quickly to accommodate to a range of outcomes.

Meanwhile, talks between May and Corbyn continue, without progress. For Brexit to have a chance, both parts need to agree before the EU Summit that would take place next Wednesday, April 10, in which EU leaders will discuss whether to grant the UK another extension. Brexit, with or without a deal, is currently scheduled for April 12.

The Pound trades uneventfully after Barnier's headlines, at around 1.3040/50 against the greenback
